Scratchboard is a medium that lends itself beautifully to the rendering of textures, and bison - being the big, textural, and fairly monochromatic subjects that they are - make prime candidates for the medium. I'm lucky enough to have the National Bison Range a short drive from my house, and I spend many summer days doing fieldwork there; I never tire of watching these great beasts going about their business.
